Urban projects win construction management awards

The Construction Management Association of America's, Mid-Atlantic Section has named two Urban construction management projects as Projects of the Year for 2003.

The Fruitville Pike Bridge Reconstruction won the award for projects less than $10 million in construction cost. This involved the reconstruction and widening of the PA Route 72 bridge over Amtrak in Lancaster County for PENNDOT. Construction started in August, 2002 and was scheduled to be completed in August, 2004. When potentially catastrophic cracks developed in the bridge it had to be closed and reconstruction accelerated to reopen the bridge to traffic. Under the revised agreement, one lane of traffic was opened by May 30, 2003 and the entire project finished by October 31, 2003, more than 10 months ahead of the original schedule.

The Reconstruction of U.S. Route 202, Section 400 won the award for projects of $10 million or more. It involved the widening and reconstruction of a five-mile section of heavily traveled Route 202 in Chester and Montgomery Counties (volumes average 180,000 vehicles per day). The $285 million project was divided into six major construction contracts. The highway, a key component of southeastern Pennsylvania’s regional transportation network, provides direct connections with Interstate 76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-276), and US Route 422. In addition to the roadway reconstruction, 60 bridges, retaining wall structures, box culverts, and sound barrier walls were constructed. A historic building, The King of Prussia Inn, was relocated to make way for the improvements. During the three-year construction period, the preconstruction level of service was maintained for the 180,000 vehicles per day that pass through two major interchanges.
