Two Urban projects win excellence awards

When the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) presented its 2005 engineering excellence awards in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Urban was well represented. Two projects were Diamond Award Winners: Barry Bridge Park Expansion and the Emerson Waste Site Investigation and Remediation.

Barry Bridge Park Expansion - Urban was responsible for civil/site, structural, geotechnical, electrical and marine engineering, quality assurance, and construction management through the construction phase. The objective was to modernize and expand the existing park, establishing it as a catalyst for revitalization and a gateway to the City of Chester’s riverfront. The project expanded the four acre park to six acres and added fishing and picnicking to park activities. Included was a 225-foot-long fishing pier, three acres of new lawn area, reconstructed boat ramps, relocated parking lot, improved storm water structures, and a new pedestrian bridge to connect the park to a nature walkway and jogging path.

Emerson Waste Site Investigation and Remediation - Urban investigated the site and recommended a remedial program to successfully extinguish a subsurface fire that had been occurring since the mid 1990s after a contractor used a City of Philadelphia-owned parcel for temporary storage of construction and demolition debris. Urban developed a Bid Specification that documented the actions needed to implement the most cost effective approach to extinguish and remediate the property. Urban supervised the construction management team that monitored contractor progress during the six-month landfill remediation.
