DelDOT Selects Urban for US Route 301 Project |

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has selected Urban Engineers for one of four consultant contracts to provide design engineering services for the Advanced Project Development and Design of the US Route 301 project.
Studies for improvements to Route 301 date as far back as the 1950s. With rapid development in southern New Castle County, safety and congestion problems on existing Route 301 have escalated in recent years. In 2005, DelDOT initiated the Route 301 project to bring closure to decades of concerns. Alternatives were studied that provided a direct connection from the Maryland state line to SR 1, reduced congestion, improved safety, and managed traffic by separating through and local traffic. DelDOT selected the “Green North + Spur” alternative as the preferred alternative during the project development stage.
The new Route 301 alignment will be a new, four-lane, limited access toll facility connecting the Maryland state line to SR 1, with a two-lane, limited access spur roadway from south of Armstrong Corner Road to just south of the Summit Bridge. The roadway will contain elements such as highway bridges at interchanges and intersecting roads, with retaining walls and culverts where necessary. The design will also include environmental elements such as visual earth berms, where feasible and prudent; variable stormwater management treatments; and landscaping. The total project length is 17.5 miles. The total estimated cost of the project is approximately $600 million.
