Marvin Waxman Consulting Engineers (MWCE, a subsidiary of Urban Engineers) has been selected to provide specialty mechanical and electrical engineering designs for the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music’s new facilities.
Founded in 1924 and located in Philadelphia, the Curtis Institute of Music trains gifted musicians from nearly 20 nations for careers as performing artists.
This project involves a new 98,700-square-foot, nine-story building to accommodate its music program and residence hall, as well as house a rehearsal facility, practice rooms, kitchen/dining and lounge area, music classrooms, and student bedrooms.
Among the demanding constraints that needed to be achieved or overcome were acoustical considerations, space limitations, and historic preservation.
The uniqueness of the building and the importance of acoustics throughout will require MWCE’s designs to meet detailed, intricate specifications and specialty standards delineated by the architectural firm of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates and the architectural acoustics firm of Kirkegaard Associates. MWCE is designing all of its systems to reduce noise and maintain comfort levels, without interfering with or impacting sound quality.
MWCE will provide complete documentation, drawings, and specifications for obtaining competitive bids for the HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, electrical, and life safety systems.
