Philadelphia International Airport recently cut the ribbon on a runway extension designed to reduce congestion and delays.
Runway 17-35 has been lengthened by about a thousand feet -- to 6,498 feet -- in order to handle larger regional jets and narrow-body jetliners.
FAA regional administrator Carmine Gallo says the extended runway will also mean fewer headaches for passengers trying to get to their destinations on time:
"The extension of 17-35 -- from 5,460 feet to 6,500 feet -- is expected to reduce delays by 6½ minutes per aircraft by 2015."
Fewer delays means less fuel burned -- better for the environment and the airlines' bottom lines.
The runway extension project cost about $70 million.
