Urban Assists DRPA with Green Ports Initiative

Urban is proud to serve as a key member of the team engaged by the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) to develop a Green Ports Initiative. The Initiative is a joint effort by the DRPA, South Jersey Port Corporation, and Philadelphia Regional Port Authority aimed at assisting the agencies to develop a cooperative approach for environmental programs and projects to reduce the impact of port operations on the environment and the surrounding community. It covers both administrative and operations and maintenance facilities.

The area of the study encompasses the New Jersey side of the Delaware River between the Betsy Ross Bridge in Pennsauken and the Port of Salem, and on the Pennsylvania side between the Betsy Ross Bridge in Philadelphia to the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester. Also included is the PATCO High-Speed Line from Lindenwold, NJ to Philadelphia.

Urban’s responsibilities include evaluation and recommendations of sustainability opportunities in the following areas:

  • Carbon Sequestration
  • Fuel Efficiency
  • Solid Waste/Recycling
  • Water Resources
  • Green Buildings
  • Emerging Technologies
  • Land Use Options

Urban is conducting facility site visits, interviewing key managers and operating staff, documenting baseline conditions, identifying and evaluating “green” opportunities, and developing a program to implement the recommended sustainability initiatives.
