ConnDOT Calls on Urban for Crucial Component Change Out Shop Project


Urban has been selected by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) to provide construction engineering and inspection services for the construction of the Component Change Out Shop (CCO), located at the New Haven Rail Yard in New Haven, CT.

This multi-story, multi-use, 300,000-SF rail maintenance building will be the largest facility in the New Haven Rail Yard.

The CCO will provide space and equipment for the following functions:

  • A shop with equipment to hoist 13 rail cars simultaneously for removal and replacement of large components;
  • Support shops used to repair and rehabilitate various rail car components and systems;
  • Facilities to test rail car components and systems, for example DC power;
  • Offices, welfare facilities, and support areas for Metro North Railroad’s (MNR) Mechanical Department;
  • Offices, welfare facilities, and storage systems for MNR’s Stores Department for the CCO Storehouse as well as for a future warehouse;
  • Offices and a lock-up to be used by MTA Police;
  • Offices, classrooms, and support facilities for the MNR Training Department;
  • Cafeteria space to be used by a food service vendor; and
  • Offices and support spaces for ConnDOT Construction and ConnDOT Operations employees.

Urban’s responsibilities include ensuring compliance with plans and specifications; project administration; coordination with state, city, and regional groups; and monitoring of utility and MNR force account work. Urban will also prepare cost estimates and change order negotiations for ConnDOT.
