Urban Awarded Statewide Contract for Traffic Signal Optimization in NJ

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has awarded Urban Engineers a task order contract to assist the agency to develop and implement optimized traffic signal timing to improve mobility for select corridors in New Jersey.

Components of the project include conducting:

  • Extensive data collection including manual intersection turning movement counts and ATRs.

  • Field investigations and analysis to determine physical conditions at intersections and whether existing timing needs to be updated to be compliant with the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

  • Updates to existing signal plans to match current NJDOT standards and reflect actual field conditions.

  • Model calibration and simulation analysis with Synchro and SimTraffic V7 to develop a calibrated corridor models to establish existing conditions and test signal timing improvements.

  • Post implementation analysis to evaluate and refine, if necessary, the recommended signal timing changes.

  • Cost/benefit analysis to document the overall effectiveness of the final implemented changes.

  • Research and design, including post implementation analysis, of true adaptive signal systems for the first planned deployments in NJ.
