Alexander Road Bridge Wins ACEC-NJ Award

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey has named the Alexander Road Bridge over Amtrak in West Windsor Township, New Jersey, as an Honor Award recipient in its annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition.

The project involved replacing a deteriorated, 146-foot-long, three-span structure, built in 1941, that spanned Amtrak’s four-track Northeast Corridor mainline.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) sought to construct a new bridge on an adjacent alignment, improve traffic circulation and safety, minimize traffic disruptions during construction, minimize right-of-way impacts, and provide an aesthetically-pleasing solution consistent with its Smart Solutions doctrine.

NJDOT engaged Urban to advance the project through the delivery process, completing the following:

  • Community involvement and consensus building
  • Engineering investigations and condition evaluations of the project site
  • Alternative structural, highway, and geotechnical design studies
  • Constructability analyses for the most-favorable alternative
  • Environmental clearance studies and acquisition of permits
  • Bid documents (plans and specifications)
  • Engineering consultation services to assist NJDOT with shop drawing review and requests for information
